i think you are refering to living a FRUGAL lifestyle, and there's a huge frugal movement right now in the US. gic should propose not only a wide boycott against the corporatocracy but also help people become more frugal, and according to what you're saying the first step is education.

Also, there is little alternative-economy infrastructure in place and there needs to be more visibility for alternative currencies, including time-based currencies. There are many timebanks that are growing everywhere. The Occupy movement has become also a forum for these ideas.
